Join in the celebration of Black 2016 graduates at Black Graduation this year – Saturday, May 14th, 2:30pm in Roone Arledge Auditorium.

Black Graduation serves as an intimate gathering for family, friends, and members of the Columbia community to celebrate the culture and accomplishments of the undergraduate graduating class. This ceremony has a long standing history within the University and is a celebration of the accomplishments of Columbia and Barnard Black undergraduate graduates.

Originally through the Black Students Organization, Black Graduation was first initiated by students who wanted the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments and recognize the important role that Black students have played in shaping the landscape of Columbia.

Black Graduation is co-sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Black Students Organization, Black Alumni Council, and Columbia Alumni Association.

Join Black Theatre Ensemble for their spring production of Lynn Nottage’s Fabulation! Fabulation tells the story of Undine Barnes Calles, a successful business woman who gave up her roots for a fast-paced life in Manhattan. When she learns that her money has been embezzled by her husband, Undine must return to her childhood home in Brooklyn pregnant and broke. Come watch the drama unfold in this comic satire as Undine addresses her past and reconciles herself with her abandoned roots as she attempts to re-transform her reality into one of triumph.

Tawan spearheads capital raising initiatives, directs developments, and implements strategy for The Peebles Corporation. Most recently, Mr. Davis led public private partnerships with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) in the administration of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. During that time, he analyzed, structured and executed high-profile transactions that brought nearly $1 billion to New York City’s coffers, created more than 5,000 jobs, and initiated several billion dollars in economic activity.

Born near Seattle, Wash., and raised in Oregon, Davis earned a bachelor’s degree in political economy from Georgetown University, a master’s in economics and sociology from Oxford University, England, and a master’s in business administration from Harvard Business School.

Among other achievements, he repositioned a broad portfolio of Harlem sites, including the future home of a civil rights museum.

Davis, who describes himself as “a bit of a teacher,” is committed to helping young people prepare for a promising future. In addition to being an adjunct professor in real estate, finance and economics at New York University, he serves on the advisory board of the New Horizon’s Children’s Advocacy Corp.

Faith Taylor currently oversees Wyndham Worldwide Corporate Social Responsibility program’s policies and strategies which include sustainability, philanthropy, wellness, diversity, human rights, ethics and responsible sourcing.

The program is implemented across 40 hospitality brands, over 36,000 employees and over 100,000 locations in 100 countries. In 2006 she created the Wyndham Green program.

Under her leadership in 2014, Wyndham was ranked as one of the top 50 Greenest Companies in America by Newsweek and in 2014 and 2015 was recognized by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index as both World and North American leader in the Hotel, Resort and Cruise line sector.

CDP has recognized Wyndham as a leader in both performance and disclosure. In 2014, Wyndham Worldwide met its goal to reduce its carbon emissions by 20%, 6 years ahead of schedule. The program has saved over $65 million dollars in energy and water expenses and 27% of its $2.1 billion supply chain has met the Wyndham Green criteria.

She is the former Chair of the Sustainability Group of the World Travel & Tourism Council and Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the USGBC of New Jersey. She is also a member of the International Tourism Partnership organizations where she has participated in setting industry standards like the Hotel Carbon Metric Initiative and policies used by over 20,000 hotels today. Wyndham is a recognized corporate leader working with the Clinton Global Initiative and the Obama Better Building Challenge in setting leading programs for the built environment. In 2014 the National Diversity Council named her “One of the Most Powerful Women in the Industry”.

She has an MBA from the Wharton business school and a BA from Stanford University. She is happily married to Gary Taylor, President of Newtek Business Credit and they have two children Jordan and Kiyomi.

Kimberly Harris is the CEO of America Needs You. Kimberly was previously a founding member and secretary of the New York Needs You Governing Board.

Prior to joining America Needs You, Kimberly was an Associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, where she represented leading companies in a variety of industries in global mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and other complex corporate transactions. In a pro bono capacity, Kimberly worked with clients on education reform initiatives, political asylum matters, child custody disputes and domestic violence cases. Additionally, at Skadden, she was actively involved with the summer associate committee, the diversity and inclusion department and recruiting. Skadden recognized Kimberly as an Outstanding Civic Leader in 2011 for her commitment to the firm and pro bono efforts.

Kimberly received a Juris Doctorate from Columbia Law School in 2006 and in 2008 was recognized as an “Outstanding Alumnus” by Columbia’s Black Law Student Association. She received a Bachelor of Business Administration, with high distinction, from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan in 2003, where she concentrated in Finance and Computer Information Systems. Kimberly is from Chicago, Illinois, where she attended public schools.

Daryl Shore is a Vice President within Global Philanthropy at JPMorgan Chase & Co, a global leader in corporate philanthropy with $200 million invested in communities annually. As Program Officer, he is responsible for managing a sophisticated, highly-visible housing and community development portfolio consisting of traditional grants and other flexible capital. Mr. Shore joined the firm in 2010.

He sits on the board of Gesu School, an independent school, pre-K to 8th grade, in one of the most marginalized neighborhoods of Philadelphia, as well as on the board of the Harlem Wellness Center, a nonprofit health and wellness center which supports life-long healthy living practices in Harlem, New York City. He also sits on the board of governors for National Housing Conference, which is dedicated to helping ensure safe, decent and affordable housing for all in America.

Prior to joining Global Philanthropy at JPMorgan Chase & Co, Mr. Shore held two previous roles in the firm’s Community Development Banking Group and Business Banking. Before joining JPMorgan Chase, Mr. Shore spent six years at Fannie Mae in various roles. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, a Master of Business Administration degree from Clark Atlanta University and a Master of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University.

Celebrating the Completion of the David N. Dinkins Archives

The life and career of New York’s first African American mayor, David N. Dinkins, is one for the history books. Now, there will be no better place than Columbia for scholars looking to write them. The David N. Dinkins Papers and Oral History Project, housed at Columbia University Libraries, has now been completed, offering researchers a wealth of material to study the 106th mayor’s contributions to politics and society.

Dinkins himself has been a professor of public policy at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs since 1994, when his single term ended. For 18 years, he has hosted the annual David N. Dinkins Leadership and Public Policy Forum, which invites prominent figures to campus to discuss current events. Last April’s forum featured as its keynote speaker Hillary Clinton, who delivered a major address on criminal justice reform and race.

Columbia Joins White House Research Initiative to Advance Equity for Women and Girls of Color

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Nov. 13, 2015) — Columbia University has become a founding member of the White House-sponsored Collaborative to Advance Equity Through Research, a national effort to engage colleges, universities and other mission-driven organizations in meaningful action to support research and improve public policy regarding women and girls of color. Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies and Dean of Social Sciences for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Alondra Nelson will lead Columbia’s participation together with Farah Jasmine Griffin, William B. Ransford Professor of English and Comparative Literature and African American Studies.

Today, the White House Council on Women and Girls, in collaboration with the Anna Julia Cooper Center at Wake Forest University, is hosting a day-long forum on Advancing Equity for Women and Girls of Color, focused on empowering and increasing opportunity for women and girls of color and their peers. The Council on Women and Girls also released a progress report, “Advancing Equity for Women and Girls of Color,” as a follow up to the 2014 report, and announced independent commitments to close opportunity gaps faced by women and girls, including women and girls of color.

“We are proud to work with the White House in applying Columbia’s deep expertise and commitment to addressing the most challenging issues facing our society including realizing the promise of equal opportunity and social justice,” said University President Lee C. Bollinger. “The new Collaborative to Advance Equity for Women and Girls of Color through Research will have an enthusiastic group of partners at Columbia and we’re grateful that Dean Alondra Nelson and Professor Farah Jasmine Griffin have taken on a leadership role.”

Dean Nelson, an authority on the sociology of science and medicine, is author of the forthcoming book The Social Life of DNA: Race, Reparations, and Reconciliation after the Genome.

“Columbia will be a great partner in this initiative of the White House Council on Women and Girls,” said Nelson. “Ongoing and new research and programming here about women and girls of color will contribute to a critical public policy dialogue about barriers to racial and gender equality and will be a catalyst for change.”

Professor Griffin, an expert on American and African American literature, music, history and politics, is most recently author of Harlem Nocturne: Women Artists and Progressive Politics During World War II.

“Faculty and students across Columbia are already engaged in a range of efforts to advance equity for women and girls of color,” said Griffin. “As part of an iconic and diverse community in New York City, we are in an ideal position to bring not only our scholarship but also our first-hand experience to collaborating with the Obama administration and our academic colleagues around the nation.”

Among Columbia’s contributions to the collaborative will be a conference this coming spring on issues of concern to African American girls organized by Griffin and Carla Shedd, assistant professor of Sociology and African American Studies. The meeting of scholars, activists, artists, and girls will be sponsored by the Office of the President, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Division of Social Science, and the Institute for Research in African American Studies, with support from the Institute for Research on Women, Gender and Sexuality.

Next summer, the Division of Social Sciences will continue a “Feminist Seminar for Girls” launched last summer by Dean Nelson in partnership with the YWCA of New York City.

11/20- B.O.S.S. Family Dinner and Fundraiser

Dear Columbia University Black Alumni:

Greetings from The Barnard Organization of Soul Sisters (B.O.S.S.)–Barnard’s longest running cultural student group for Black students since its establishment in 1968. On November 20th, B.O.S.S. will be hosting its annual Family Dinner – a celebration of family and fellowship centered around a free soul food dinner for members of the University community. In addition to inviting BAC alumni to attend, we also have a special request.

During this event, we hope to host a silent raffle, in which proceeds will go towards B.O.S.S. members attending the 21st Annual Black Solidarity Conference at Yale University in February 2016. The Conference is the largest gathering of Black undergraduates in the Northeast. Such an opportunity will allow B.O.S.S. members to network and connect with students from across the country. This year, B.O.S.S. hopes to sponsor 15 students–the largest cohort ever from Barnard College–to attend the Conference. In order to subsidize the registration and hotel costs for 15 students, B.O.S.S. must fundraise $1800.

For this raffle, we need prizes. We’re writing to ask BAC alumni to donate a gift card or small gift for our undergraduate audience. Examples of possible gift card retailers include: Target, Starbucks, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Apple, and H&M. Examples of small gifts include $100 American Express/VISA gift cards, Beats by Dre headphones/speakers, concert tickets, iPad mini/Kindle, spa certificates, and small kitchen appliances. BAC General Body Meeting With NYT’s Dean Baquet

Join us for our monthly meeting with our special guest Columbia’s own Dean Baquet,  ?executive editor of The New York Times?, the top position in the newsroom?. Mr. Baquet will meet with Black alumni and student leaders about student activism and communication in an Interconnected World.

Mr. Baquet was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting in March 1988 when he led a team of three in documenting corruption in the Chicago City Council, and was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in 1994 in the investigative reporting category. He has also received numerous local and regional awards.

Eric Holder to Receive Alexander Hamilton Medal

Eric H. Holder Jr. ’73, LAW’76 will be presented the 2015 Alexander Hamilton Medal on November 19, at the Alexander Hamilton Award Dinner, an annual black-tie event. The medal, the highest honor paid to a member of the Columbia College community, is awarded annually by the Columbia College Alumni Association for distinguished service to the College and accomplishment in any field of endeavor.

Eric H. Holder Jr. ’73, LAW’76 served as the 82nd Attorney General of the United States from February 2009 to April 2015. He has since rejoined the law firm of Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C., where he had been a partner from 2001 until joining the Obama administration. He is the third-longest serving attorney general in U.S. history and the first African-American to hold that office. Holder is a former University trustee, member of the Columbia College’s Board of Visitors, and member of the Law School’s Board of Visitors. He and his wife, Dr. Sharon Malone PS’88, have three children.
