4/21 – Educating Everyone: A Conversation with Gen. Colin Powell about Equity and Excellence in American Schools
On Wednesday, April 21 from 12:00-1:00PM, the Harvard Black Alumni Society of New York, with support from Scholastic, will host General Colin Powell, the 65thU.S. Secretary of State and the only African American to serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, for a discussion on creating an education system that works for all students. This event will feature insights from General Powell as well as from New York public school educators, administrators, parents and students on how we, as a nation, can attain equity and excellence for all students and more relevantly, how we as citizens can support and promote this pursuit in our day-to-day lives. Other speakers will include David Banks, President of the Eagle Academy Foundationand Rhena Jasey AB’01, Founding Teacher at The Equity Project.

Each year, more than 1 million young people drop out of high school in America – a crisis that Gen. Powell has aptly termed “a moral catastrophe.” As a part of HBASNY’s year-long initiative on education, which includes both community service events and awareness events, this conversation comes during the Harvard Alumni Association’s Global Month of Servicein April and only months after the HBASNY’s launch event attended by over 400 people on the high school dropout crisis (www.dropoutcrisis.weebly.com) featuring NYC Schools Chancellor Joel Klein and Harvard Graduate School of Education Dean Kathleen McCartney among others.
